Essay On Love DoesnT Always Conquer All - 1593 Words
Lois Berger Love Doesnââ¬â¢t Always Conquer All You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. Maybe the narrator in James Joyceââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Arabyâ⬠doesnââ¬â¢t become a villain, but his dreams of being a hero die on the day he realizes he is powerless to get the girl he loves. This is a classic case of how romanticism negatively affects people, especially young men. Thereââ¬â¢s nothing wrong with romance in and of itself; many people read books and watch movies involving a hero and a damsel in distress. Itââ¬â¢s when romanticism is taken too farââ¬âitââ¬â¢s when young peopleââ¬â¢s lives are shattered by its often misguided ideologyââ¬âthat problems start to arise. The boy in ââ¬Å"Arabyâ⬠starts out with his head in the clouds; he has found a girl heâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This isnââ¬â¢t necessarily a bad thing, but itââ¬â¢s his imagination that helps feed his detrimental sense of romanticism. If the houses didnââ¬â¢t have faces and the streetlig hts didnââ¬â¢t have to lift their lanterns, the boy could have been saved from his heartache. In ââ¬Å"The Motivation for Anguish in Joyceââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËAraby,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ the authors argue that the majority of the interactions between the narrator and Manganââ¬â¢s sister are almost entirely psychologicalââ¬âthe boy is so infatuated with her that he romanticizes everything she says and does: ââ¬Å"It must strike us, therefore, as odd that Manganââ¬â¢s sister acts as she does while talking with the narrator. The nervous turning of her bracelet as she speaks betrays a lack of self-confidence in the younger narratorââ¬â¢s presence which a real sixteen-to-eighteen-year-old girl is unlikely to have. . . [there is] an implication of her interest in the narrator himself. . . [this is] not the relationship which exists in this storyâ⬠(Brugaletta and Hayden 13). We donââ¬â¢t know what the girl says in actuality, but we can only assume her words and actions must have been completely different than how the narrator describes them. Itââ¬â¢s hard to imagine Manganââ¬â¢s sister saying, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s well for youâ⬠(156). North Richmond Street isnââ¬â¢t the only thing that is blind; Harry Stone argues that the boy is just as blind as anyoneââ¬âor anythingââ¬âelse. ââ¬Å"That

Research on using laptops in university ABSTRACT Computers and laptops are most important in higher education. Now a dayââ¬â¢s most of the universities are preferring laptops for using in classrooms. Laptops are very useful in many things like information gathering, data savingâ⬠¦etc. When compared to desktop it is easy to carry and we can perform the task quickly by using the laptop. Students that used laptops preferred taking classes where they could use the computer. Student satisfaction is higher when report using the laptops for academic purposes. A number of studies have reportedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Fried also found that students who used laptops in class spent considerable time multitasking and that the level of laptop use was negatively related to overall course performance. Methodological There are at least four issues with respect to methods used to evaluate the use of laptops in higher education. First, the predominant method of data collection is the case study. While this approach offers guidance and advice on best practices for using laptops, the reliability and validity of the data have yet to be confirmed for the general population. Second, some studies have employed quasi-experimental methods t o evaluate the impact of laptops on student achievement. These studies do not offer data on how laptops are actually used in higher education classrooms. Third, a number of studies involve students who were not provided equal access to technology. Motiwallaââ¬â¢s paper on using handheld devices in class is innovative, yet it is not truly indicative of the benefits and drawbacks of mobile learning because many of the students in the sample did not have devices equipped with the technology essential to participate in the study. Finally, the majority of studies offered no reliability or validity estimates for the measures used to assess laptop behavior while the data from these studies offers useful suggestions regarding laptop use. Sport Trends in the Ymca Free Essays
There are multiple ways that recent trends in the sport industry are affecting the YMCA. A majority of them would be revolving around the economy and how the YMCA is considered a luxury to the people. Others would be the increase of fitness in the world and sport curiosity and also the elderly still maintaining their healthy lifestyles. We will write a custom essay sample on Sport Trends in the Ymca or any similar topic only for you Order Now The increased popularity of celebrity athletes in the world are leading to an increased popularity in the sport world (Balmer, 2009). The battle against obesity is increasing the number of people who join a fitness club or health organization. Also, many people are beginning to try to find both healthier lifestyles and seeking a balance between work and leisure (Sports, 2007). Lastly, the way that kids are being taught is changing; practices are becoming known as best practices and the kids are learning more of the sport and becoming better (Stephens, 2009). All members of the YMCA consider it as a luxury to their life. They would not die without it and do not need it to sustain their current life. When the economy is bad so is the amount of memberships that are still active. If a member encounters a financial situation the first thing that would go would be their YMCA membership. Employees at the YMCA know this, ââ¬Å"At Countryside YMCA, we welcome everyoneââ¬â¢s involvement by providing financial assistance to subsidize memberships or classes for eligible families or individualsâ⬠so they encourage and run a scholarship program (YMCA). This program encourages young people to stay active and fit while still in school. If your parent may not be able to afford you a full time membership as long as you maintain good grades and can prove that you are a full time student then you will be supplied with a membership at next to nothing if not for nothing at all. Another current trend affecting the YMCA would be the new attitudes toward maintaining health and the attitudes of the elderly toward staying active. The YMCA recently held their annual Halloween run. This event is a marathon through the mud. Many officials were very concerned with their recent numbers and were in fear that the marathon would be a disaster and they might actually have to cancel the event. They stuck through it and held the event and they had one of the best turnouts they have ever had. It was because of the youth and the elderly banning together to make this event so amazing. The number for the amount of people participating in the event ages 40 and on increased from a meager 15% to an astounding 35%. The number of people participating from the ages of 18 to 40 nearly doubled. With the increase of sport curiosity the YMCA is prospering because they offer a variety of sports. The increased popularity of celebrity athletes is affecting the YMCA extremely. One of the founders of the YMCA was Neil Armstrong and a lot of people sign up just for that reason. As bicycling expands and the popularity of Lance Armstrong grows the YMCA is beginning to develop into the trend by now offering spinning classes. Also, as the world of mixed martial arts expands they YMCA went from offering just karate classes to offering more diverse classes that people like to watch and want to learn how to do them. It is clearly obvious that there is a major hike in the world obesity rate. Effects from this rises are people wanting to become more active in the fitness area. ââ¬Å"Health Organization, since 1980, the number of obese people in the world has more than doubled and that in 2008, 1. 5 billion people aged 20 years old and older are overweight and 500 million are obeseâ⬠(Danek, 2011). Since the YMCA maintains a friendly environment where there is a mass amount of different programs offered more people are beginning to go to the YMCA. Next, people have to work longer and harder schedules at work. This is leading them to have no time to go to a gym or enroll in a class that meets on a certain day and time. The YMCA offers an affordable place to work out whenever you want to. It is open nearly all day and all areas are open at any point in the day. If a person is having a tough time balancing their business world with their activity world there wouldnââ¬â¢t be a better place than the YMCA for them. Lastly, the way kids are being coached and how practices are ran are becoming more proficient and more focused on the kids overall ability. Coaches are learning they way to manipulate a kid and get their full potential out. This is certainly happening at the YMCA from their basketball games to their baseball games. Kids are being coached a lot better leading to more success in their games. References Balmer, K. (2009). Sport industry trend. Analysis Of The Opening Scene Of American Beauty (1999) essays
Analysis Of The Opening Scene Of American Beauty (1999) essays I decided to analyze the opening section of American Beauty. The film starts straight into Jane being filmed by her neighbour who she is having a conversation with. By starting the film with the use of a hand held video camera effect, it makes the film seem much more authentic. Jane is lying on a bed and does not show the whole of her body; this may suggest that she is not the main character but a significant player in the main characters life. She is dressed in black and blue colours, which suggests her character to be quite dark and mysterious. The lighting is dark and muted, which expresses a melancholic mood. Her make up is plain and there is no emphasis on particular features. Jane is staring into the camera, which is meant to engage the audience. The scene then cuts to the title of the film in red text on a black background that are colours associated with death. The next scene is showing the whole neighbourhood in which the family live. The lighting is bright and real, in contrast to the scene before. The camera does not give a focus on any particular house yet, as it is trying to come across as though this is an average family from an ordinary suburb. The next scene is of Lester lying in bed and the camera is looking down on him as to when the camera was at level with his daughter in the previous scenes. This shows how the character is interpreted by sections of society whereas many people would be on literally the same level as Jane, many people would look down on Lester. The camera shows the whole bed and there is nobody lying next to Lester. This shows that even in the beginning of the film that the relationship between him and his partner is not that close. However, the arrogant body language that he has shows that he does not care about the relationship. The lighting of this scene is convincing because it is real daylight. This emp hasizes the fact that the props and setting is genuine. In bed, Les...

Automobiles In Society essays
Automobiles In Society essays This paper is an analysis of the impact of the increasing number of automobiles on the global environment, peoples lives and health, and the structure of Western society. In addition to exploring the impact of automobiles, technologies that have been developed to cope with the problems will be examined, as well as potential long-term solutions to the social and ecological problems caused by automobiles. While the ecological impact of automobiles on society may be perceived in more concrete terms, the measurement of its social impact is more abstract in its definition. Mark Delucchi suggests that the total social cost of automobile use is the welfare difference between the current motor vehicle system and a system which provides exactly the same services (that is, moves people and goods to and from the same places as do motor vehicles) but without time, manpower, materials, or energy - in short without cost (Delucchi 1997: 136) This interpretation of the social cost of automobiles eludes to several general categories of impact, such as personal non-monetary costs, bundled private sector costs, government costs, and various externalities. More specifically personal non-monetary costs of automobile use refer to any unpriced costs of traveling such as time spent during a commute or the risk of having an accident. (Delucchi 1997: 138) Bundled private sector costs are generally large costs which are not explicitly priced into the automobile such as free non-residential parking, the cost of home garages and of local roads provided by private developers. (Delucchi 1997: 138) Government costs refer to taxpayer funding which is being used to support the highway infrastructure; funding which would otherwise be used for another social purpose. Finally, the social cost of externalities refer to uncompensated pain and suffering from accidents, traffic delay, and any mental anguish, ra...

Describe and explain strategic and short-term planning processes and Assignment
Describe and explain strategic and short-term planning processes and their importance in management. Identify and discuss various types of financial accounting and control methods - Assignment Example There are two strategies that are going to be used in this discussion. The first of the two is a strategy that was aimed at raising capital amounting to raise $1.5 million from a certain investor. The business strategy was developed by the Manufacturing and Marketing Beverage Appliances, Inc. (2MBA, Inc.). Manufacturing and Marketing Beverage Appliances, Inc. (2MBA, Inc.) has the dedication to developing an innovative beverage equipment that will be used by major food brands. The company is run by a team of four managers who own 60% of the companyââ¬â¢s equity and have two of the bard positions. They are supported by a shareholder by the name Brian Pelerman who own 10% equity and is a member of the board. The strategy suggests that the investor will be given two seats on the board. The strategy also advocates for the appointment of an independent chairman. The full implementation of the strategy will lead to the introduction of two new products to the market. One of the products that are supposed to be introduced is known as La Barista. La Barista is an espresso machine that will enable brewers to produce high quality coffee. It is so fast that is manages to do that in just four seconds. It produces coffee from soluble coffee powder. La Barista is a single boiler with the capability of producing both water and steam. This innovation will eliminate the need for a barista. It also requires low maintenance. The other product that will definitely be introduced if this strategy is successful is known as a Mobile Vending Unit (MVU) which is a retailing cart with high portability, ease of operation, and durability. This will enable the delivery at customerââ¬â¢s convenience. It is also cheaper and more secure as compared to the traditional ones. The company has a contract with expecting them to supply 2,300 MVU and La Baristas in the next five years. The
